Celebrating Students

“Celebrate good times. Come on” Kool & The Gang

I am participating in the #AprilBlogADay challenge. The prompts are provided by Meredith Towne (@BklynMeredith)  a teacher in Brooklyn, NY. Today’s prompt is “Celebrations: How do you bring celebrations into your classroom or school?”

I recently started trying to celebrate students who make good choices and exhibit Trojan (our school mascot) Traits of Greatness. The idea is to interview the students and create videos. The videos are then shared with our community through my school Web page.

The first episode ended up being a minimum viable product (MVP). I first heard the term in an introduction to business class many years ago. An episode of Angela Watson’s Truth for Teachers podcast brought the theory into education aspect for me.

I have been working on creating additional issues, but scheduling and technical issues have limited production.

At a previous school, I have brought celebrations into the school by rewarding students who returned reading logs with a bag of popcorn, reading from the roof of the school, kissing a pig, and buying lunch for the whole school. Additionally, we chose students of the month for each class and celebrated them in our weekly newsletter and on our Web page.

My current school does shout outs over the intercom every morning, a Trojan head on their locker, and lunchroom announcements of the best behaved classrooms in the cafeteria and those who line up first after recess.

In the future, I plan to continue using video to celebrate students. With time and work, the episodes will improve and become more frequent.

Depending on the grade level of the students I will adjust celebrations to the audience.

I want to hear about ways you celebrate students.

My Commitment – April Blog a Day Challenge
I have joined the #AprilBlogaday Challenge. The goal is to submit a blog entry every day in April. I will not promise each blog entry will be motivational, energetic, and thought-provoking. However, I will do my best to continue to reflect on my journey of learning and my areas of growth.
