My Dream Course . . . #Aprilblogaday

This month, I have decided to participate in the #Aprilblogaday challenge. To help with topics, I am using the prompts provided by Meredith Towne (@BklynMeredith) a teacher in Brooklyn, NY. Today’s prompt is: My dream course would be . . . (to teach or to take)

Having participated in the #AprilBlogADay challenge last year, I wrote a response to this question last year. I am still very interested in taking a Great Books course and teaching a Careers course. Though, for the sake of reflection, I have chosen to take another look at my dream course. Instead of choosing a course, I chose a degree program.

In the summer of 1988, I applied to Iowa State University. I was accepted, and I planned to enter enroll in January 1989. Life happened, and I never made it to ISU. I still cheer for the Cyclones. In fact, I picked them to win the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship (March Madness). I was devastated when they lost in the second round (not really, but disappointed). Ever since 1989, I have dreamed of entering ISU. If I were to get another degree, I believe it would be an MFA in Creative Writing and Environment from ISU.

I want to engage in writing. I want to read. And while I would not consider myself an environmentalist, I believe I would enjoy the focus on the environment. I find the program’s focus on the environment interesting. As they say in their description, the program gives MFA candidates the “opportunity to document, meditate on, mourn, and celebrate the complexities of our transforming natural world” (ISU).

I believe the focus of writing books and poetry is to connect others to worlds they have never experienced and to ask them to question the world around them. Poets and writers have always written about nature and the human condition.

If I had the time and money (and my wife’s permission), I would apply to the program. I don’t so I will have to use the opportunities presented to write, read, and share.

My Commitment – April Blog a Day Challenge
I have joined the #AprilBlogaday Challenge. The goal is to submit a blog entry every day in April. I will not promise each blog entry will be motivational, energetic, and thought-provoking. However, I will do my best to continue to reflect on my journey of learning and my areas of growth.
